Event to inspire confident male allyship and tackle violence against women and girls in Wiltshire and Swindon
Taking place on 22 November, in the newly refurbished Legends Lounge at the County Ground in Swindon, the event is focused on increasing awareness of gender equality through promoting and inspiring confident allyship. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn practical strategies and gain actionable insights on how to effectively support and advocate for gender equality in the community and workplace.
While many women and girls enjoy a safe, fulfilled life in Wiltshire and Swindon, harassment, gender-based violence, workplace inequality, discrimination and stereotyping are still commonplace. Inspiring gender equality is a crucial step to tackling violence against women, with inequality often being identified as a root cause for abuse.
To prevent this, societal improvements must be made which includes ensuring equal pay, fair housing and welfare policies, and providing better employment, education, and training opportunities for women and girls.
Nationally, the figures relating to violence against women and girls (VAWG) are frightening and have been described as a ‘national emergency’ in a recent report by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC).
The report identified that at least one in every 12 women will be a victim of VAWG every year and one in 20 adults in England and Wales will be a perpetrator of VAWG every year. Furthermore, one in six homicides in England and Wales are linked to domestic abuse, or 100 out of the 590 homicides in the year to March 2023.
Attendees for this event will hear from experts who will share their experiences and best practices in promoting gender equality and discover how small, consistent actions can contribute to significant change and how you can be part of that change. It is hoped that those who attend will leave empowered to make a difference within their workplace and local communities.
The event will be hosted by radio presenter James Threlfall MBE and speakers include Frank Mullane MBE, Jeremy Blain, and Kate Rowland from Swindon Domestic Abuse Support Service. Attendees will learn about how they can take an active role in addressing gender equality and domestic abuse, through the speakers’ lived experience.
Wiltshire Community Foundation is inviting individuals, companies and small businesses to join them for an event to raise awareness of gender inequality and inspire male allyship. Tickets are £30 per person and thanks to event sponsorship by Charlton Baker, all ticket proceeds will go towards the Foundation’s Women and Girls Fund, which supports local charities and community groups who challenge the inequality, abuse and discrimination experienced by women and girls, and amplify their voice. The fund also supports young women with educational and vocational bursaries.
